The blog HotAir just broke this story and it's pathetic. So I ask:
anyone out there know how what steps one has to go through to get a recall petition started on Ben Nelson?

Gill, your input is greatly appreciated. I have left a voice message with a friend who works for a lobby group in Lincoln and has a real good ear for all of this.
Just at the beginning on all of this so I'm very interested in keeping in contact because your help, and your input indicate that you would be a good source and help, if that's ok with you.
I think my e-mail address shows but if not, it's rpowell1@neb.rr.com

I really think that by the end of '10, you will see the guy announce that he is not seeking re-election. His internal polling is going to be so horrible because this is not what Nebraska stands for.

I think Nelson will go down as one of the biggest sellouts in American political history. I haven't lived in Nebraska in about 15 years now, but I still have family in Omaha and consider myself a 'husker'. I plan on, not only contributing to whoever his opponent is in the next election, but actively campaigning as well. I think he's a coward as well as a traitor and he needs to retire post haste.

As a past resident of the state of Nebraska, and a UNO alumni I try and follow Nebraska politics. To answer the question of Betty and NebraskaPatriot, here is the answer. 132,436 signatures. I hope this gets going. I would be willing to travel to this great state to wake up some of these indivduals that do not represent who or where they come from.
Nebraska 32-1303
A petition demanding that the question of removing an elected official or member of a governing body listed in section 32-1302 be submitted to the registered voters shall be signed by registered voters equal in number to at least thirty-five percent of the total vote cast for that office in the last general election, except that (a) for an office for which more than one candidate is chosen, the petition shall be signed by registered voters equal in number to at least thirty-five percent of the number of votes cast for the person receiving the most votes for such office in the last general election

I believe it's worth a try to see what it takes to recall the man. I agree with you that I don't know or if it can be done but I'm not willing to sit back and not try. Nelson's disregard to the great majority of Nebraskans is not just over some defense or low income housing issue, this is about the health and well being of all Nebraskans. So, I'm willing to give it a try and see. The worst that happens is that we can't pull it off, meanwhile, we also work on 2012.

I don't know that you can get him recalled but certainly we need to start finding a GOP candidate to run against him in 2012. He has sold his constituents out today and is hoping Nebraskans won't notice higher taxes, rationed medical care, our tax dollars paying for hundreds of thousands of abortions and a federal deficit that our great-grandchildren will be paying for. He's got to go!
